Tuskegee University marks the launch of its men’s and women’s soccer programs with a ceremonial coin toss on August 17. A 50.8 millimeter ceremonial coin will be flipped at midfield before the opening match, commemorating the historic debut of Tuskegee soccer as the university’s newest athletic program. The Tuskegee Tigers will compete at the NCAA Division II level.

Designed as a keepsake, the coin connects Tuskegee’s 145-year history with the launch of its soccer program. The obverse features a P-51 Mustang “Red Tail” fighter flying above a formation of Tuskegee Airmen, the pioneering black military aviators trained at the university during World War II.

The reverse depicts Tuskegee’s iconic “Lifting the Veil of Ignorance” monument, showing founder Booker T. Washington lifting a veil from a kneeling freedman holding a book. The image represents the university’s longstanding emphasis on education and opportunity.

Both sides are framed by “Tuskegee Soccer” and “Inaugural Season–August 17, 2026,” with a soccer ball incorporated into each design. “The Tuskegee story has never been confined by geography. From the historic accomplishments of the Tuskegee Airmen to the global impact of our graduates, this university has always reached far beyond Alabama,” says Dr. Mark A. Brown, Tuskegee University president and CEO. Following the inaugural match, the coin will be preserved in the athletic department’s permanent collection. Limited commemorative editions will be available to fans and alumni later this year.

The Tuskegee coin’s celebration of soccer comes as the U.S. Mint prepares its next four-year quarter series highlighting youth sports beginning in 2027.
