The United States Mint is teaming up with DC to bring Supergirl into coin collections from sea to shining sea and beyond. Supergirl, known as Kara Zor-El, made her earthly debut in Action Comics #252 in May 1959 and is introduced as the cousin of Kal-El, or Superman. The Woman of Tomorrow makes her appearance in the U.S. Mint’s Comic Art Coin and Medal Program, which includes a 2.5-ounce silver medal and half-ounce 24-karat gold coin.

A common design shared by the silver medal and gold coin show Supergirl flying high above the clouds on the obverse. The reverse depicts the heroine and her canine companion, Krypto the Superdog, within the visage of a starburst and surrounded by the inscriptions SUPERGIRL, BRAVERY LIFTS HER, and GRACE GUIDES HER. The silver medal was struck by the Philadelphia Mint, and the gold coin hails from the West Point Mint.

The silver medal has a maximum authorized mintage of 25,000, while the mintage limit on the gold coin sits at merely 10,000. The pieces are slated for release by the U.S. Mint on October 1. Although the silver medal has a preset issue price of $400, the price for the gold coin will be determined upon release and pursuant to prevailing bullion prices.
