About 470 Australians are participating in the 2024 Olympics. To celebrate the nation’s athletes competing in Paris, the Royal Australian Mint will gradually release four colored uncirculated $2 coins throughout the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The first three releases pay tribute to the Olympics and feature a central vignette encircled by a colored ring. The ring depicts stylized golden wattle flowers, Australia’s national floral emblem. Two of the central vignettes feature the iconic team mascot, BK, a boxing kangaroo, and the third bears the Australian Olympic Committee logo. On the reverse of the Paralympic coin, the Paralympic team mascot Lizzie plays goalball. The obverse of each specimen features Daniel Thorne’s effigy of King Charles III.
Struck in aluminum bronze, the Olympic pieces are available as a three-coin set from the mint, while the Paralympic coin can be purchased individually. All four coins will also be available at select Woolworths supermarkets across the nation. To learn more, visit the mint’s website.
