The United States Mint will send 250,000 strikes of the semiquincentennial 2026 Declaration of Independence quarters with special “July 4” privy marks into circulation on July 4 to honor the nation’s 250th birthday. These special privy-marked quarters will be randomly placed in circulation alongside regular 2026 Declaration of Independence coins. The July 4 quarters can’t be bought by collectors in sets or rolls from the U.S. Mint, but rather will be acquired by those who find them in change during everyday transactions. This gives everyone an equal chance at landing coins that will soon surely be regarded by the numismatic community as rare and valuable.

“July 4” Privy Marks will Make History

“This is more than a coin—it’s a defining moment in our nation’s story,” U.S. Mint Director Paul Hollis shared in a press release. “We hope Americans enjoy the search for these iconic quarters as they’re meant to be shared, saved, and remembered as part of this historic anniversary.” The coins will be distributed to banks and financial institutions across the United States in time for them to enter circulation by July 4. It’s safe to suggest that the “July 4” quarter will inspire many collectors to buy rolls and boxes of quarters from their local banks and other financial institutions to search for the coin.

A similar circulation-only release of limited-edition West Point-mintmarked quarters in 2019 and 2020 sparked national headlines. The “July 4” privy marks are poised to become the next “Golden Ticket” moment for numismatics, helping to put the hobby under the spotlight of news-media heavyweights and social-media influencers.
