To honor the rock band U2 and its 50-year career, the Central Bank of Ireland released commemorative €2 coins. Formed in Dublin in 1976, the popular band has sold over 175 million records worldwide and has won 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other band.

Designed by Shaughn McGrath, the reverse of the limited-edition release recognizes band members Bono (Paul Hewson), Edge (David Evans), Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. Above the group is the legend U2/50TH ANNIVERSARY.

The U2 commemorative is legal tender throughout the eurozone. A brilliant uncirculated version, encased in a collectable card, has a mintage of 150,000 and is priced at US$17. Also available is a silver proof example (mintage 5,000) for $45. Both versions can be purchasedthrough the Central Bank of Ireland’s online store.

Deputy Governor Madouros said: “It is a privilege for the Central Bank of Ireland to honour U2 with a €2 commemorative coin,” says Vasileios Madouros, the bank’s deputy governor of monetary and financial stability. “U2 represents the very best of Irish creativity and talent on the global stage. For 50 years, their music has inspired millions of people around the world. This commemorative coin is a fitting tribute to their legacy and profound impact on popular culture and beyond.”
