Massive gold coins bearing President Donald Trump’s portrait commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States will not be ready in time for Independence Day on July 4. The delay, reported by Newsweek, was announced by the United States Mint in conjunction with a lawsuit questioning the legality of a coin depicting the sitting president.

In response to the legal action against the Trump gold coin, U.S. Mint Chief of the Office of Design Management April Stafford told Newsweek, “The Mint is currently in the design stage of a large 24k gold coin depicting President Trump in commemoration of the United States semiquincentennial.” Stafford continued, “There is no official on-sale date for this gold coin. While the coin will be minted in celebration of the semiquincentennial on July 4, 2026, this is not the target date for issuance.”

Given the usual timeline from design approval to production, it’s plausible the Trump gold coin will not be available to the public until late this year or early 2027. The coin is slated to have a limited mintage of 47 pieces and will contain approximately $90,000 of gold.
