In commemoration of the 35th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, APMEX has partnered with video game company Sega to release a gold bar and five colorized 1-ounce silver rounds to celebrate the popular video game.

The obverse design for four of the .999-fine silver rounds features Sonic with his friends Knuckles and Tails. The game’s logo appears above. Each reverse depicts a different character from the games: Knuckles, Tails, Dr. Eggman, and Sonic. The obverse of the fifth commemorative features Sonic’s face surrounded by gold rings and the seven Chaos Emeralds. The reverse depicts the blue hedgehog in the center with the numeral 35 in the background, as well as the Chaos Emeralds. The legend UNLIMITED POSSIBILITIES frames the design.

APMEX also produced a 1/2-gram .9999-fine gold bar for the collection. The obverse features a Chaos Emerald with inscriptions for the size and fineness, as well as the Sega logo. On the reverse, Sonic is pictured running forward.

Mintages are limited to 5,000 for the 1-ounce silver coins and 7,500 for the gold bars. To purchase, visit APMEX’s website.

Sonic the Hedgehog

First released on June 23, 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog was created by Sega to compete with Nintendo. The franchise follows Sonic, a blue hedgehog with super speed, who battles Dr. Eggman and his robot army. Later games introduced characters like Sonic’s sidekick Tails, a two-tailed fox, and his friendly rival Knuckles, an echidna.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog game helped boost sales of the Sega Genesis console and established Sega as a viable competitor to Nintendo. The best-selling video game spawned numerous sequels, spin-offs, movies, and toys.
