Earlier this year, the Royal Australian Mint quietly released a limited-edition $1 coin into circulation. It has since announced its significance: the new $1 marks 60 years since the country adopted decimal currency.

The modification to the standard $1 coin is subtle—a sixth kangaroo has been added to the original group of five. The change is the first since the $1 coin’s introduction in 1984. The 60th anniversary piece will be minted only this year. More than 8 million coins with the additional kangaroo were already in circulation by March.

“Some people in the community have found a different $1 coin in their change,” says Emily Martin, the Royal Australian Mint’s chief executive. “Some have wondered if it’s a mistake. Some have wondered what the story behind it is. It’s exciting to tell everyone it’s a part of our celebration. It’s six kangaroos for 60 years.”
