Collectors will be able to purchase enhanced Morgan and Peace silver dollars from the U.S. Mint starting August 25. Released to celebrate the semiquincentennial, the special-edition enhanced dollars feature the dual date 1776-2026 and a unique Liberty Bell privy mark. The dollars were struck at the West Point Mint in an enhanced uncirculated finish, which utilizes laser-engraving techniques to create devices with sharper contrasts. The enhanced dollars have a mintage limit of 250,000.

The mint is anticipating massive interest in these coins; orders are limited to 10 units per household. For more information on these enhanced modern classics, visit the U.S. Mint’s website.

Morgan and Peace Dollars

The Morgan dollar was originally minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. U.S. Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan crafted the design, which represented the country’s westward expansion and industrial development. In December 1921, Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon approved the Peace dollar as the replacement for the Morgan dollar. Anthony de Francisci designed the coin, and the U.S. Mint produced it until 1935 to celebrate the United States’ rise as an international power and the peace following World War I.

Their appealing designs and history made both issues attractive collectibles. In response to their popularity and the 100th anniversary of the final minting of the Morgan dollar and the first minting of the Peace dollar, the U.S. Mint launched a commemorative program for the coins in 2021, with new releases each year.
