On September 26, the Osborne Mint announced the release of a new medal issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the Eastern Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, which is an order of chivalry under papal protection that supports the Catholic Church and Christian communities in the Holy Land. It is also the oldest lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order in the United States, which includes New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and the Bahamas.

Last month, examples of the medal were presented to Pope Leo XIV in Rome and received his blessing during a meeting with ANA past president and Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee chairman Thomas Uram and other members of the Eastern Lieutenancy. It was a memorable moment that connected the medal to the Order’s ongoing mission.

The medal celebrates the Eastern Lieutenancy’s history, faith, and commitment to Christian communities in the Holy Land. The Osborne Mint struck examples in 2-ounce silver, selectively gilded, and in bronze. One side depicts the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and a gilded “75.” The other side shows the Jerusalem Cross with the windows of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York in the background.

The piece was created through a partnership that brought together Uram, who guided its creative development; Chang Bullock, founder and president of Minted Assets, who served as project manager and distributor of the medals; Chiara Principe, the noted Italian artist who designed the medals; and Ben Murray, an Osborne Mint engraver who brought his technical expertise to the medal’s production.

The medal is part of the Eastern Lieutenancy’s 75th anniversary celebration, during which 500 members and supporters met at St. Patrick’s on October 17 to celebrate the entity’s work and history. The event also included the investiture ceremony, in which new members are inducted.

Founded in 1835, the Osborne Mint is the oldest continuously operating private mint in the United States.
