Starting in 2027, Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) will take over the Coin of the Year Awards. NGC has launched a comprehensive review of the judging process, award categories, and nomination procedures, potentially implementing significant changes to the international program, which has honored exceptional modern coin designs since 1984.

The company intends to strengthen the awards while maintaining transparency, consistency, and fairness. NGC notes that the composition of the judging committee and the procedures for selecting nominees deserve particular attention. For now, the company has not confirmed which categories or procedures, if any, will change. NGC also wants feedback from the numismatic community. Collectors, artists, mint representatives, and others can submit suggestions directly to [email protected].

NGC’s new role follows a major expansion of its numismatic reference resources. In July, Certified Collectibles Group, the parent company of NGC and Paper Money Guaranty, announced its acquisition of the Krause-Mishler and Pick catalog systems. The acquisition brought two established numismatic research systems into the Certified Collectibles Group organization. Now, the Coin of the Year program joins that expanding portfolio.

Max Spiegel, president of Certified Collectibles Group, welcomed the opportunity to oversee the awards. “We are in a new renaissance of numismatics, with so much innovation and design excellence,” Spiegel says.

NGC expects to announce additional details about the competition through its website, social media channels, and monthly newsletter.
