Guaraní Note Refresh

The Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP) has announced that it will unveil its new guaraní bank note designs on October 5, coinciding with the denomination’s 83rd anniversary. It is the first full redesign of the country’s notes in more than 60 years. The process began in 2023, with seven of the world’s most prominent bank note printing houses submitting bids. Oberthur Fiduciarie, a French firm, won the contract. 

The new notes will pivot from depicting historical figures to elements of Guaraní (a South American indigenous group) culture. The backs will highlight the flora and fauna of Paraguay’s six ecological regions. The BCP released a promotional video hinting at imagery on the notes, which included tereré (a cold drink popular across Paraguay), the bellbird, and the Paraguayan polka dance.

The BCP has confirmed that the redesign will not alter the currency’s value, and it will not make any modifications to the monetary system. All six existing denominations (₲2,000, ₲5,000, ₲10,000, ₲20,000, ₲50,000, and ₲100,000) will continue to circulate.
