Medals celebrating the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, held on August 22-23 in Washington, D.C., are now available for preorder from the U.S. Mint. An IndyCar inscribed with USA appears in the center of the obverse with the U.S. Capitol building in the background. Below the car is the legend FREEDOM 250, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is at the top of the medal. The reverse features a portrait of former racecar driver and IndyCar owner Roger Penske wearing a headset. His name appears at the bottom right, and MOTORSPORT PIONEER frames the design.

“The Freedom 250 Race Medal captures the national pride, engineering advancements, and legacy of open-wheel racing, while celebrating the first IndyCar Series race ever held in our nation’s capital,” says U.S. Mint Director Paul Hollis. “The medal also serves as the perfect semiquincentennial collectible for motorsport enthusiasts and numismatists alike.”

The medal (mintage 15,000) is available for preorder until September 4, with shipping expected to begin by September 28.
