Canada’s Black Silver Throwback to the Penny

The Royal Canadian Mint recently released the 2026 Triple Maple, a coin containing 1 ounce of .9999-fine silver, with a face value of $20. The Triple Maple series, which launched in 2025, is one of several Canadian bullion coin programs and is named for the distinctive arrangement of three maple leaves on the reverse. The maple leaf configuration on the Triple Maple is reminiscent of the double-maple design seen for 85 years on the reverse of the Canadian 1-cent coin, which was last struck for circulation in 2012. 

What makes the 2026 Triple Maple silver coin really stand out is its unique charcoal-colored surfaces, achieved through black rhodium plating that offers “maximum contrast,” says the mint on its product page for the coin. The Triple Maple design is the skilled craftwork of retired Royal Canadian Mint Senior Engraver Stanley Witten. The obverse is anchored by an effigy of King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati. The matte proof coin has a mintage of just 7,000 and is available for CAN$269.95 (US$192).
