Costa Rica’s newest 25-colón coin is, as some might say, “fire!” The latest entry in the nation’s Emblematic Sites of Our Provinces coin program features Arenal Volcano, a famous landmark in Costa Rica’s Alajuela province.

The reverse of this sixth issue in the seven-coin series is anchored by a side view of Arenal Volcano with the inscriptions PROVENCIA DE ALAJUELA and VOLCÁN ARENAL flanking the design at the top and bottom of the canvas, respectively. The obverse elements are mostly text and showcase the denomination in the center of the field with the legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA and BANCO CENTRAL DE COSTA RICA; two raised bars are included to help visually impaired individuals identify the coin by touch.

The Arenal Volcano 25 colones was released April 22 and is being struck for both general circulation and collectors. These offerings are colorized and are priced at 8,500 colones apiece, with 10,000 encased in an acrylic block with laser engraving and 7,000 housed in a deluxe presentation case with a numbered certificate. Circulating examples are being distributed via financial institutions around the country.
