Ventris C. Gibson, the 40th director of the U.S. Mint, announced her retirement March 20. Effective March 31, Gibson will step down from her position despite having two years left on her five-year presidentially appointed term. The Treasury Department hierarchy asked Gibson to step down to accommodate President Donald Trump’s nomination for director of the U.S. Mint. As of this writing, he has not yet announced his nominee.

Gibson joined the U.S. Mint as deputy director and acting director on October 25, 2021. She was confirmed by the full Senate on June 22, 2022, for a five-year term. Prior to her service as mint director, she worked as director of human resources for the District of Columbia government. In that role, she oversaw human capital programs and services for over 37,000 employees. Gibson also served as an associate deputy assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, she held leadership roles in the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Until the U.S. Senate approves President Trump’s nomination, Deputy Director Kristie McNally will act as director.

Gibson’s Parting Message

“I know the past couple of months have been challenging for us in responding to a number of requests from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, Treasury, and others,” Gibson says. “Now, over the next couple of weeks, there are some employees who have been approved to participate in the Deferred Resignation Program. Some are resigning, some are retiring. These employees are part of our Mint family. We will miss them, and it will feel quite different being without them for quite some time. Try to find ways to celebrate them, thank them for their service, and develop ways to keep in touch with them.  I have so thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Mint and will miss it deeply. Be blessed and be a blessing!  Know that you are loved and will live indelibly in my heart!”
