Authors David Schwager and Burton Strauss have released the 3rd edition of their book Sample Slabs, Volume 1. The text covers the samples issued by Professional Coin Grading Service, Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), and Numismatic Conservation Services (a subsidiary of NGC).

Initially distributed for free to collectors and dealers, encapsulated coins labeled “SAMPLE” now have an active secondary market with many desirable varieties. The known number of types is over 1,500 to date, with both new and old ones being discovered (or rediscovered) almost daily. The 692-page book provides information on sample, promotional, club, show, luncheon, novelty, and young numismatist coin holders.

It’s available as a downloadable PDF or as a print-on-demand paper copy for $45. Because of this technology, purchasers can choose between three cover designs inspired by—respectively—the second edition, social media, and the diversity of slab labels. To order, visit their website, and email info@sampleslabs.info with questions.

The authors are currently working on Volume 2, which will include the other 40 known issuers of sample slabs. A release date has not yet been determined.
