Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently revealed that the Treasury department has already produced mock-up designs for a proposed $250 bill featuring Trump’s image. The legislation authorizing the new denomination, H.R. 1761, was introduced in Congress on February 27, 2025. The proposal would amend the Federal Reserve Act and require the Treasury Department to print $250 Federal Reserve notes bearing Trump’s likeness. Bessent’s announcement drew attention because the development of new U.S. currency typically takes years. Explaining the decision, Bessent said, “We’ve created the bill” because “we have to be prepared.” The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Financial Services for discussion.
