If you’re a young numismatist who’s getting ready to attend your first coin show, this guide is for you! Here’s a few tips to help you have the best experience at your first convention.

Do Find a Kids’ Activity

Lots of coin shows have activities for YNs! If a show has a kids’ activity, go there right away. This is a good way for you to practice handling and identifying coins before exploring the rest of the show. These activities are lots of fun and often involve lots of free coins! As a YN, I made grab bags, filled up penny folders, and did scavenger hunts at coin shows. At every coin show, be sure to participate in the programs that are made for you!

Don’t Be Rough with the Coins

When holding a coin, make sure to touch only the edges. The dirt and oils on our hands can damage coins, so do your best to avoid touching the obverse (heads) and reverse (tails) of a coin. It’s important to never touch or reach for a coin without permission. If you ask, dealers may allow you to hold coins and can give you tips on how to handle them. Don’t feel discouraged if you make a mistake—I’ve dropped coins at shows before. You’re still learning, and most dealers will understand that.

Do Look in “Junk” Boxes

Many dealers have bins filled with coins they’re selling for cheap—sometimes less than 10 cents a coin. Buying coins from these boxes is a great way to grow your collection. You can find coins with interesting designs, shapes, and colors. Take your time looking through these boxes and finding things you like.

Don’t Get Discouraged by the Prices

Some coins will be selling for thousands of dollars. Don’t get upset by this or worry that the hobby is too expensive. Instead, focus on how cool it is that you get to look at such valuable coins. In fact, you don’t need any money to enjoy a coin show. As a YN, you can treat the show like a museum and enjoy learning about all the different coins.

Do Talk to the Dealers

Talking to the coin dealers might seem intimidating, but don’t worry. Kids are very welcome at coin shows. After all, you’re the future of the hobby! As a YN, I knew a dealer called “The Penny Man” who gave out Indian Head cents to every kid that came by his table. At coin shows, you’ll meet friendly dealers who are happy to answer your questions and give out freebies. Talking to dealers is a great way for you to learn more about coins and add to your collection.

Don’t Interrupt the Dealers

While it’s exciting and fun to talk to people like The Penny Man, it’s important to remember that the dealers are there to do business. It’s their job to sell coins. If a dealer seems busy or is talking to a customer, don’t interrupt them. You can always come back to an interesting table when it’s less busy.

Do Have Fun!

Attending a coin show is an awesome way to learn about coins, expand your collection, and meet YNs. Get out there and have a great time!
