An extraordinary Dutch pattern coin is among the top offerings that will be featured in Heritage Auction’s ANA World & Ancient Coins Platinum Session and Signature Auction on August 27-29. The specimen offers a peek into the implementation of the ducaton as a denomination of coinage produced by the United East India Company. Graded Proof (PR)-63 by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), the 1728 gold proof pattern ducaton is one of more than 300 lots in the auction from the Peh Family Collection.

“The Peh Family Collection is one of the elite numismatic assemblages in the world, and this 1728 proof pattern ducaton in gold is indicative of the advanced quality and strong eye of the collector,” says Kyle Johnson, managing director of world & ancient coins at Heritage Auctions. “Also known as the ‘silver rider,’ the ducaton was conceived in the Seven Provinces in 1659, and the design with the horse and rider became synonymous with Dutch power in the colonial era. Not only is this coin beautiful, it also is exceedingly rare.” It is one of just two known examples.

More Treasures

Other offerings from the Peh Family Collection, Part II include some of the most iconic and rare types from across British, Mexican, and Ethiopian numismatics, with a focus on both beauty and historical significance. Two other massive collections share the spotlight in this exciting sale.

The first, the Eternal Collection, Part II, offers 120 impeccably preserved pieces from Latin America, each representing a distinctive and often elusive type. With roots in post-independence Mexico and European engraving mastery, the collection reflects a blend of national identity and technical innovation, making it a magnet for serious collectors.

Completing the trio is the Gatsby Collection of South African Coinage, Part II, a 128-lot assemblage of extraordinary South African rarities. With many pieces unseen in the market for years, this collection underscores the depth and diversity of South Africa’s numismatic heritage.

Highlights from all three assemblages include:

• 1839 Victoria gold proof “Una and the Lion” 5 pounds (PR-61 Ultra Cameo, NGC)

• Mexico Republic 1827 Go-WW silver proof pattern 8 reales (PR-64 Cameo, NGC)

• 1909 Estados Unidos silver proof essai “Caballito” peso (PR-66 Cameo, NGC)

• South Africa Republic 1897 gold proof 6 pence (PR-63 Cameo, NGC)

• A unique 1928-SA George V bronze matte-proof pattern sovereign (PR-64 Brown, NGC)

Together, these collections elevate the auction into a landmark event, bringing together some of the finest and most desirable coins ever assembled. Lots will be available for viewing at the ANA World’s Fair of Money® in Oklahoma City on August 19-23. For more information, visit Heritage Auctions’ website.
