The U.S. Mint has unveiled the first issue in its Charters of Freedom series. Available starting February 6, the platinum proof $100 coin honors the Declaration of Independence. The obverse features a quill in the foreground with sun rays piercing through storm clouds in the distance, representing the dawn of a new nation from the turmoil of revolution and the Enlightenment ideas that influenced the Declaration of Independence. Surrounding the scene are 13 stars and the inscription LIBERTY, as well as IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Below the scene is the legend DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE and the year. The reverse, common to the series, depicts an eagle in flight with an olive branch in its talons, along with the country, denomination, fineness, and weight. Mintage is limited to 15,000.
