The U.S. Mint’s fourth release in its “Best of the Mint” series pays homage to the storied 1804 dollar with a gold reissue coin and a silver companion medal. Steeped in myth, mystery, and prestige, this rare coin has been the subject of multiple books and countless research articles. Minted in 1834 for special diplomatic proof sets, they were sailed around the world and given to two rulers—the King of Siam and the Sultan of Oman. Only 16 are known to exist. (Read more about the newly discovered 16th specimen here.)

Now, for the first time, collectors can own a modern tribute to one of America’s most coveted numismatic icons. The 1-ounce silver medal draws inspiration from the coin’s elegant design and historic diplomatic mission. Flowing, ribbon-like hair on the obverse echoes Liberty’s styling on the original. Arched clouds from the classic reverse reappear as a braided motif—encircling Liberty’s head and the globe, symbolizing the dollar’s international journey and lasting legacy.

Best of the Mint Series

Last year, the U.S. Mint surveyed Americans on their favorite historic coins. The five top-rated pieces were reviewed and recommended by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee and U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, with final selections approved by the Secretary of the Treasury.

In addition to releasing newly designed circulating coins in 2026, the U.S. Mint is issuing five special “Best of the Mint” numismatic coin and medal sets as part of this journey through history. These sets include 24-karat .999-fine gold coins reissued as faithful representations of the historic designs with the original dates of issue to acknowledge each coin’s place in history. The coins also bear a special semiquincentennial Liberty Bell privy mark with the numerals “250.” Each coin has a 1-ounce silver companion medal, featuring new and modern designs.

The mint will reveal a new design in the 2026 “Best of the Mint” series each month. Prior releases include the 1916 Mercury dime, 1916 Standing Liberty quarter, and 1916 Walking Liberty half dollar.
