The Tolkien Society wrote to the Bank of England to recommend that J.R.R. Tolkien should appear on the next series of bank notes. The group—an educational charity, international fan club, and literary society based in Bicester, Oxfordshire—asserted that Tolkien’s impact on modern culture has earned him a place on British paper money. Past notes have featured other prominent British authors, including Jane Austen and William Shakespeare, and Tolkien has previously been honored on coins and stamps in the United Kingdom and around the world. Tolkien Society Chief Executive Shaun Gunner says, “This is a unique opportunity to honor Tolkien. His life. His works. His inspiration. His impact.”

The Bank of England accepted theme suggestions from UK residents July 2-31. It will consider the public’s suggested topics and themes, such as notable historical figures and events; architecture and landmarks; arts, culture, and sports; UK innovations; and native animals, plants, and landscapes. The bank reported that it received a large number of suggestions, particularly from young people.
