The South African Mint, famous for striking coins that celebrate Africa’s native animals, has cast its gaze upward for 2025, launching its Odyssey of the Sky series last month. The first release honors the Bateleur eagle. The eagle is one of the most popular animals depicted on coins around the world. However, this occasion marks the first time the South African Mint has featured the iconic bird.

The gold and silver coin designs blend dynamic wildlife imagery with traditional South African motifs. The obverse of the 5- and 10-rand silver coins depicts the Bateleur eagle about to land, with its wings spread and its talons extended to capture its prey. The obverse of the 50- and 100-rand gold coins features a detailed close-up of the eagle looking down. All the coins have an intricate pattern inspired by an Isishweshwe tribal print interwoven into the design. The reverse is the same for all the pieces. It bears the national coat of arms with elements of the ornamental Isishweshwe tribal print from the obverse around the crest. Mintages of each denomination are limited. A bird of prey native to sub-Saharan Africa, the Bateleur eagle’s name means “tightrope walker” and refers to its distinctive, rocking flight pattern. With a wingspan of up to 6 feet, a vivid red face, and barely visible tail, they are easily recognizable in the sky. This eagle is a diurnal hunter and scavenger, covering hundreds of miles each day. The males and females form lifelong pair bonds and typically raise just one chick per year. Their population is in decline, mainly due to habitat loss, poisoning, and human disturbances. It was named the 2024 Bird of the Year in South Africa to raise awareness of its conservation plight.
