This week’s headlines include Olympic commemorative coin proposals, a Polish metal detectorist’s find, a record-setting $4 Stella, and a Croatian commemorative.

Legislation has been proposed for commemorative coins in honor of the 2028 Los Angeles and 2034 Salt Lake City Olympic and Paralympic Games. Surcharges for the gold, silver, and clad coins would support the games and promote youth sports in the United States.

A Polish metal detectorist uncovered a hoard of nearly 5,000 17th-century coins near Świerszczów in eastern Poland. The find includes mostly copper boratynki and a few silver coins. Now at Hrubieszów Museum, the treasure offers insight into a turbulent time in Poland’s history.

Heritage Auctions sold a rare 1880 Coiled Hair $4 Stella, graded Numismatic Guaranty Company Proof 67, for $2.28 million, setting a record for the coin. Three other NGC-certified Stellas also topped six figures.

The Croatian National Bank honors inventor Slavoljub Penkala with gold €100 and silver €4 commemoratives celebrating his innovations, including the mechanical pencil, early ballpoint pen, and over 80 patents. The limited-edition coins feature the inventor’s portrait and his writing instruments.
