This week’s headlines include a valuable find in the British countryside, high-quality Indian Head gold $5 coins, Flowing Hair silver medals, and updates to the Smithsonian’s “Value of Money” gallery.

A metal detectorist who has searched the same field in England for two decades has finally struck gold. Paul Capewell unearthed a rare Roman denarius issued by Emperor Trajan in Little Grandsen, Cambridgeshire, that could be worth £6,000 (nearly $8,000).

GovMint has announced its final release of $5 Indian Head gold coins from the Fairmont Collection Reserve+, a special high-quality subset of the Fairmont Collection, which is one of the largest hoards of U.S. pre-1933 gold coins ever discovered.

The U.S. Mint began accepting orders for the 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medal last week. The medal pays homage to the Flowing Hair dollar, the first dollar coin issued by the federal government on October 15, 1794. Mintage is limited to 75,000.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History is updating its “Value of Money” gallery to mark the exhibit’s 10-year anniversary. Changes include a rotating display case, a refreshed entry feature, and extensive new content. The gallery is currently closed and will reopen around November 15.
