This week’s headlines include the sale of a historic scale, an updated guide to the greatest U.S. coins, an NNP milestone, and a coin for working dogs.

The Nevada State Museum was the winning bidder in Holabird Western Americana’s sale of a historic scale. The 155-year-old, 5-foot-tall balance scale weighed gold and silver in the 1800s at the Carson City Mint. The museum acquired the piece for $60,250.

Whitman has released its 6th edition of 100 Greatest United States Coins, offering readers an updated guide to America’s numismatic legends. In this latest version, the 1933 Saint-Gaudens double eagle has officially claimed the No.1 spot, replacing the 1804 Draped Bust silver dollar as the nation’s greatest coin.

The Newman Numismatic Portal project celebrates its 10th anniversary this month. Launched on December 1, 2014, at Washington University, the Newman Portal has added over 80,000 documents to its collection, representing a wide array of auction sale catalogs, periodicals, reference works, and archival materials.

President Joe Biden has signed The Working Dog Commemorative Coin Act into law. The legislation that honors the contributions of working dogs to society authorizes the U.S. Mint to issue a commemorative coin series in 2027. Surcharges from coin sales will go to America’s VetDogs.
