This week’s headlines include the repeal of sales and use tax exemptions in Maryland and Washington, shifts in Syria’s bank note production, the Traveller Collection, and Whitman’s Prestige coin albums.

The governors of Maryland and Washington recently signed laws repealing longstanding sales- and use-tax exemptions on retail purchases of coins and precious-metal bullion. Maryland’s new law eliminates exemptions for most purchases over $1,000 starting July 1, 2025, while Washington’s repeal takes effect January 1, 2026.

On May 16, Reuters reported that Syria plans to shift its bank note printing operations from Russia to other countries, including Germany and the United Arab Emirates. The decision reflects evolving geopolitical and economic considerations.

Numismatica Ars Classica’s first auction of the Traveller Collection realized CHF 6,341,200 (US$7.68 million), doubling its initial estimate. The standout was a rare gold “Una & the Lion” £5 pattern, which sold for CHF 980,000 (US$1.19 million), while other notable sales included rare pattern crowns and a unique Queen Anne naval medal.
