This week’s headlines include a Swiss coin marking the Matterhorn ascent, euro bank note redesign, Fred Holabird’s retirement, and 7th edition of the Cherrypickers’ Guide.

Switzerland is releasing a limited-edition 1-ounce silver 50-franc coin to mark the 160th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn. Designed by CIT Coin Invest AG, the coin features ultra-high-relief engravings of the mountain on the reverse and the seven climbers from Edward Whymper’s 1865 expedition on the obverse.

The European Central Bank aims to unveil redesigned euro bank notes by 2028. The updated notes will feature either cultural figures such as Beethoven and Marie Curie or showcase Europe’s natural landscapes. A design competition will launch later this year.

Fred Holabird, cofounder and company advisor of Holabird Western Americana Collections in Reno, Nevada, has announced his retirement. In an email to clients, he wrote, “It is time for me to retire while I still have some gas in the tank and hopefully the wheels can stay on.” The company’s last consignment call is September 1, 2025.

Whitman Publishing has named numismatist Noal White co-editor of the upcoming 7th edition of the Cherrypickers’ Guide to Rare Die Varieties of United States Coins. With 20+ years of numismatic experience, White will help ensure the guide’s accuracy. The new edition will be published as a single, comprehensive volume .
