This week’s headlines include bronze Biden U.S. Mint medals, Royal Canadian Mint honors, a Roman coin exhibit in Spain, and China’s cashless society.

Five months after former president Joe Biden left office, the U.S. Mint has issued a bronze Presidential medal honoring the 46th president. Biden is pictured with his name and signature on the obverse, and the reverse shows the White House and Capitol with a democracy-themed quote.

The Royal Canadian Mint was ranked fifth on Corporate Knights’ list of Canada’s Best 50 Corporate Citizens. It also ranked first among metal products manufacturers. The minting facility was recognized for its sustainability efforts, including emissions reduction, inclusive leadership, and responsible economic practices.

Spanish officials have unveiled the “Treasure of Tomares,” a public exhibit of over 50,000 ancient Roman coins discovered in 2016 during construction in Tomares, near Seville. The collection of 3rd- and 4th-century coins is the largest discovery of Roman coins ever found in Spain and among the largest worldwide. They are now on display in Madrid’s National Archaeological Museum.

An article in Le Monde reports that coins and bank notes have nearly disappeared from commerce in China and have been replaced by digital payments via WeChat or Alipay apps. Most shops and taxis now only accept QR codes, and many businesses no longer have a cash register as nearly everyone under the age of 80 pays for goods and services electronically.
