This week’s headlines include the U.S. Mint’s Superman coin, a former Latin teacher’s collection, Georgia’s 5-lari commemoratives, and the Royal Mint’s Zog coins.

The U.S. Mint debuts its DC Comics Coin and Medals Program with Superman-themed limited-edition gold coins and silver medals on July 28. Future releases will feature Batman, Wonder Woman, and more superheroes through 2027. Silver medals will be struck at Philadelphia, and gold coins at West Point.

A collection of ancient Roman coins owned by former Connecticut Latin teacher Carol Ross sold for over $1 million. Auctioned by Doyle in New York, highlights included a rare aureus depicting Marcus Junius Brutus selling for $314,000 and an Augustus aureus fetching $180,000. Ross’ 130-piece collection spanned a wide range of values and reflected her passion for Roman history .

To mark 30 years of Georgia’s national currency, the National Bank of Georgia has released 5-lari commemorative coins. Available from June 4, the coins come in base metal (mintage 20,000 ), gold-plated silver (5,000), and gold (1,500). Featuring national motifs and the ₾ symbol, these collector pieces celebrate the nation’s independence and the lari’s legacy.

The Royal Mint is celebrating 15 years of Zog, the beloved dragon from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s children’s book of the same name, with a new 50-pence coin. Featuring Zog in flight, the coin joins the mint’s childhood characters series, which includes The Gruffalo and Paddington Bear.
