This week’s headlines include a coin theft in Spain, a record-breaking sale of a 1983 Lincoln cent error, and a book about banking history.

Coin dealer and U.S. gold specialist Don Kagin of Kagin’s, Inc. was the victim of a theft while attending a coin show in Madrid, Spain. Someone stole his roller bag with rare gold coins inside when he stopped to make a purchase after leaving the show. Four perpetrators are suspects in the theft.

 A transitional 1983 Lincoln cent error struck on a bronze planchet instead of the 99.2-percent zinc composition sold for a record $26,000 at a GreatCollections auction.

A team of researchers uncovered a hoard of gold coins in the ancient Greek city of Notion in western Turkey. The coins, which date to the 5th century B.C., were likely used to pay mercenary troops.

Paolo Zannoni, a distinguished banker and historian, has written a book that explores the history of banking. His book Money and Promises: Seven Deals that Changed the World looks at the exchange of debts and promises that shaped the modern world.
