This week’s headlines include a warning about coin scams, new issues from the Hungarian and Croatian Mints, and unfounded rumors about British coinage.

The FBI has issued an urgent warning about an increase in the number of scams involving collectable coins. More than 100 victims in at least 30 states have lost over $9 million to scammers promising a significant profit on fraudulent coin purchases or sales.

The Hungarian Mint has issued the first of only two gold coins that will be released in 2024. The .986-fine gold coin marks the 800th anniversary of the birth of St. Kinga, the patroness of salt miners. Mintage is limited to 2,000.

The Croatian Mint continues its Croatian Heritage series with a new coin dedicated to the island of Susak on the northern Adriatic coast and its rich cultural heritage. The latest release pictures a woman wearing a brightly colored skirt paired with pink socks, the region’s traditional costume.

News outlets in England speculated that the future of 1- and 2-pence pieces was uncertain because the Treasury is not expected to place orders with the Royal Mint for either denomination in coming years. However, a Treasury spokesperson says the decision was made because the number of coins in circulation is sufficient and it “has no current plans to change the mix of UK coins.”
