This week’s headlines include 2024 Royal Mint coins, legislation barring living U.S. presidents on coinage, Irish numismatics, and Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro.

The Royal Mint is offering its 2024-dated coins at a discount until the end of the year. After December 31, these 2024 issues will no longer be available. Discounts include up to 50 percent off brilliant uncirculated, up to 30 percent off silver proof, and up to 10 percent off gold proof coins.

Democratic lawmakers have introduced the Change Corruption Act, which states that no U.S. currency should feature “the likeness of a living or sitting president.” If passed, the law would block the issuance of a proposed Trump $1 coin.

Edward Colgan has published a comprehensive, illustrated history of Irish coinage from 1926 to 2002. In Our Own Coinage, the author examines design debates, decimalization, commemoratives, unused proposals, and the introduction of euro coinage.

Bulgaria will adopt the euro on January 1. Bulgarian levs will remain legal tender through the end of January, and levs can be converted into euros through June 30. Bank accounts will be converted automatically into euros at 1.95583 levs per euro on January 1.
