This week’s headlines include the discontinuation of the ruble coin, sale of a Marcus Brutus aureus, a tactile museum, and a British naval vessel commemorative.

Russia has decided to discontinue production of the 1-ruble coin. It instead will print paper 1-ruble bank notes as a cost-savings measure.

Swiss auction house Numismatica Genevensis recently sold a rare Roman gold aureus featuring the portrait of Marcus Brutus for €1.98 million (U.S. $2.08 million). It was issued in 43 or 42 B.C., soon after Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 B.C.

The Truhlsen-Marmor Museum of the Eye in San Francisco has opened its first tactile exhibit. It features three-dimensional models of eye anatomy, animal color vision, and coins from the collection of Dr. Jay M. Galst, a noted collector and researcher of coins related to ophthalmology.

The Royal Mint has released commemorative coins honoring the HMS Belfast, a formidable Navy vessel that was part of the British naval blockade against Germany during World War II.
