This week’s headlines include CCAC applications, NLG leadership change, the U.S. cent debate, and uncut $5 currency sheets.

The U.S. Mint is seeking applicants for appointment to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) as a member representing the interests of the general public. Those interested in applying for the position can email submissions to the U.S. Mint until Friday, October 18, 2024.

Jerry Jordan has replaced Patrick Perez as the new executive director of the Numismatic Literary Guild (NLG). Jordan intends to bring back an online newsletter and is interested in hearing from writers who might want to contribute their work to the NLG.

The New York Times Magazine published an article on September 1 about the continued production of U.S. cents despite the fact that most are never spent. Staff writer Caity Weaver explores the situation in “America Must Free Itself from the Tyranny of the Penny.”

The U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing recently released limited-edition Series 2021 $5 uncut currency sheets. The Series 2021 sheets feature Federal Reserve $5 notes bearing the signatures of Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen and Treasurer of the United States Chief Lynn Malerba.
