This week’s headlines include a German medieval coin hoard, the 2024 Flowing Hair silver medal, and a show about the SS Central America treasure.

Archaeologists have uncovered a hoard of around 1,600 silver coins in Glottertal, Germany, that date to the early 14th century. The cache was first discovered by a local resident while he was assisting with a water pipeline installation. It is the largest medieval coin hoard found in the region since 1949.

The U.S. Mint will release the 2024 Flowing Hair silver medal on October 15 to coincide with the 1794 Flowing Hair dollar’s 230th anniversary. The mint recently published images of the upcoming medal and the companion gold coin.

The Bank of Canada released a methods-of-payment report that measures Canadians’ adoption, use, and opinions about various payment methods. The report states that 20 percent of purchases in Canada were made with cash in 2023, similar to the past three years.

National Geographic will air a show about the scandal surrounding the treasure recovered from the SS Central America shipwreck. “Cursed Gold: A Shipwreck Scandal” will be shown on Sunday, September 8, at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
