NGC Certifies 1924 Olympic Gold Medal
Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) certified a rare first-place Olympic medal from the 1924 Summer Olympics held in Paris. NGC authenticated the medal and graded it Mint State (MS)-65. With a diameter of 55mm, the medal is silver and coated with gold, just like current Olympic gold medals. Andre Rivaud designed the obverse, which depicts a victorious athlete extending a helping hand to a fallen competitor. The famous Olympic rings appear below—this was the first year the logo appeared on Olympic medals. The reverse design features sporting equipment and a harp, symbolizing the hopes for peace following the devastation of World War I.
The medal recently sold, uncertified, for $46,279 at an RR Auction in January 2024. It was displayed at Fanatics Fest NYC from August 16-18.
