One of the first 2026 semiquincentennial coins arrives in circulation with the release of the Mayflower Compact quarter. The coin’s design was not widely anticipated, as neither the Mayflower Compact theme nor the motif that appears on the quarter was recommended by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) to then-Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen in October 2024.

However, with the ascension of Scott Bessent as Treasury Secretary in 2025, the prevailing design philosophy for the nation’s semiquincentennial coinage also changed. The Mayflower Compact, which was the first governing document of the Plymouth Colony, is significant for serving as an inspiration and model for other foundational American documents, including the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The obverse of the Mayflower Compact quarter, designed by Roland D. Sanders and engraved by Eric David Custer, features two pilgrims gazing upon the horizon of the New World. The reverse showcases the Mayflower sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean in a scene envisioned by designer Cyrus E. Dallin and engraved by Phebe Hemphill. The Mayflower Compact quarter can be found in circulation or purchased from the U.S. Mint in rolls or bags, with other product options slated for release later this year.
