The Texas Bullion Depository (TxBD), the only state-run bullion depository in the United States, has released new gold and silver coins, as well as Redback gold notes. These products are not legal tender and are “issued solely for their commemorative, numismatic, and collectible value, not as an investment vehicle,” according to TxBD.

The 2025 State of Texas Proof-70 commemorative coins are available in 1-ounce gold bullion, gold proof, and silver bullion versions. The obverse features the Gonzales cannon as well as a topographic map of Texas, highlighting the state’s diverse geography. Additionally, the legend TEXAS BULLION DEPOSITORY 1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD encircles the design. The reverse includes Texas’s official coat of arms—a star surrounded by oak and olive branches—which the Republic of Texas first adopted in 1839. The year of issue and the inscriptions THE STATE OF TEXAS and FRIENDSHIP surround the coat of arms.

The Redback gold notes are inspired by promissory notes issued by the Republic of Texas in the late 1830s. “Unlike their historical predecessors, the modern Redbacks are crafted with intrinsic value,” says the Texas comptroller’s office. “Each note contains a precise, verifiable layer of 24-karat gold deposited onto a durable polymer substrate.” The notes are available in three weights: 5 centigram (cg), featuring the Texas longhorn; 20cg, featuring the Texas State Capitol dome; and 100cg, featuring the Alamo. The Redbacks are individually numbered and bear the Texas state seal and the signatures of the governor and acting comptroller.

The silver Texas Lone Star coin and modern Redback gold notes are available to purchase through the United States Gold Bureau. As of this writing, the silver coin is selling for $86.98.
