Registration is open for the 5th International Convention of Historians and Numismatists, to be held September 2-6 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Held every two years, the conference has earned a reputation as the most prominent international numismatic gathering in South America. This year’s event, hosted by the Brazilian Numismatic Society, will illuminate the historical importance of Rio de Janeiro, highlighting its strategic position on the Brazilian coast, which made it a major trading center between the Americas and Europe.

The convention brings together premier historians, numismatists, academics, minting companies, and auction houses from more than 30 countries. Among the convention’s vast offerings are lectures and presentations by industry experts, roundtable discussions, workshops, special exhibitions, book launches, museum and historical site visits, and social events. Highlights include:

  • A Brazilian 960-réis patacones will be available for viewing, along with other Hispanic, independence, and European coins that will be on public display for the first time. Also on exhibit will be Brazilian military medals and decorations.
  • A limited-edition commemorative medal and coin, designed by international artists, will be launched during the event and will be available only to conference attendees.
  • On the cultural side, participants will have the opportunity to take guided tours of Rio’s iconic landmarks, including Christ the Redeemer,  Sugarloaf Mountain, the National Historical Museum, and Fort Copacabana.
