From the Depths

The Austrian Mint has released the most recent issue in its Fantastic Mythical Creatures series. The vivid €3 coin highlights the hippocampus, a sea monster from Greek mythology with a horse’s upper body and a fish’s tail. On the reverse, the creature appears in the ocean surrounded by seaweed and coral, with a gold crown below the scene and a gold band running around the edge. When viewed under UV light, the reverse illuminates and changes color, with the legend HIPPOKAMP and portions of the creature turning orange. 

The obverse depicts an ornate key with the letter “F,” along with the denomination and REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH. The design is superimposed on a sun recessed into a textured circle surrounded by stars.
