Five-Coin Auction: Paul McCartney Pieces
Stack’s Bowers Galleries is partnering with the Royal Mint to conduct a special auction on March 19. The sale will feature just five coins (one gold and four colorized silver), all of which celebrate musical legend Paul McCartney. The Royal Mint collaborated with McCartney and his production team to design the spectacular pieces, which weigh 5kg (11 pounds) each and were struck in a presentation-edition format.
The gold piece is the largest gold proof coin in the Royal Mint’s Music Legends series. It took over 250 hours to make, including three days of polishing. Additionally, McCartney hand-signed the coin during his 2024 Got Back tour in Paris. The winning bidder will receive a short video from McCartney congratulating them on their acquisition.

As for the silver pieces, only four exist in this presentation format, excluding a fifth example that was gifted to McCartney. Like the gold counterpart, these silver coins are the largest silver proof coins in the Music Legends series. These specimens represent the first time McCartney has been featured on a British coin. “This feels like a huge honor,” McCartney says. “It’s not anything I would have ever expected to happen when I was a kid.”

McCartney is a British musician, singer, songwriter, and composer who first rose to international prominence as a member of The Beatles, one of the most influential and successful bands in music history. Acclaimed for his melodic bass playing, versatile vocal range, and prolific songwriting, McCartney’s influence spans generations. According to Stack’s Bowers Galleries, “Quite simply, Paul is either your favorite musician or he is your favorite musician’s favorite musician.”

McCartney and the Royal Mint will donate a percentage of the auction’s revenue to charity, which means that buyers will acquire a historic keepsake while also contributing to a good cause. For more information, visit Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ website.
