First Amendment Final Coin
The five-year (2021-25) First Amendment to the United States Constitution coin series concludes this month with the release of the final issue. The series highlights the five freedoms enshrined in the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” The fifth and final issue, to be released February 20 at noon ET, features the latter—the right to petition.
This series uses the lifecycle of the oak tree from seedling to a mighty oak to symbolize our country’s growth. According to the U.S. Mint, “Liberty grows to a thing of strength and beauty from a seed—our Bill of Rights. Each of the freedoms enumerated in the First Amendment contributes to the growth and development of our nation. The oak, known for its strength, can live up to 200 years and is a symbol of endurance.” The coin’s obverse design features a mature oak tree and the inscription WITH THE RIGHT TO PETITION LIBERTY ENDURES. The common reverse design for the series depicts an eagle in flight with an olive branch in its talons.
The $100 platinum proof coins are priced at $1,545, and mintage is limited to 9,000. To order, visit the U.S. Mint’s website.
