In August eBay expanded its Authenticity Guarantee in the United States to cover collectable coins. From now on, U.S. and world graded coins and U.S. raw coins purchased for $500 or more will be authenticated by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) at no additional cost to buyers or sellers.

In 2022 eBay launched its Authenticity Guarantee for trading cards to support the booming category, and now with coin listings on eBay up 40 percent from June 2025 to June 2026, the company has expanded its guarantee to the rapidly growing coin market.

“The coin industry is experiencing incredible growth, with PCGS seeing a double-digit increase in collector submissions in 2026,” says Stephanie Sabin, PCGS president. “This partnership—pairing one of the largest marketplaces with one of the largest coin authenticators—elevates and protects the hobby for everyone. We’re excited to help bring greater confidence to collectors buying and selling online.”

How It Works

Eligible listings carry eBay’s blue Authenticity Guarantee badge. After a purchase, the coin is sent to PCGS, where authenticators verify its genuineness, examine its overall condition and general quality, and compare it with the seller’s listing description. Once authenticated, the coin receives an e-tag—a tamper-proof seal with a unique QR code that allows the buyer to access information about the coin and its authentication journey. The coin is then securely packaged and sent to the buyer.

The program also provides an additional safeguard on returns for sellers who accept them. Instead of being returned directly to the seller, the coin goes back through the authentication center, where experts confirm it is the same item originally sold and check its condition before returning it to the seller.

“Every coin has a story, and we’re making it easier than ever for collectors to buy and sell with confidence while helping preserve the integrity of one of the world’s oldest collecting hobbies,” says Adam Ireland, vice president and general manager of global collectibles at eBay.

In addition to its Authenticity Guarantee expansion, eBay is increasing its involvement in the numismatic community. This year, the company funded five Professional Numismatists Guild nexGen scholarships, was a sponsor of the 2026 ANA World’s Fair of Money®, and sponsored the PCGS Young Numismatist event held in conjunction with the show.
