Things don’t seem quite as busy as usual at the United States Mint these days—at least not according to recent data the mint released on coin production totals for the year so far. Total coinage output for the first quarter of 2026 was down nearly 50 percent from this time last year.

Numbers like that may strike some as rather alarming, but there’s an important tidbit that must be remembered here: the Lincoln cent usually accounted for more than half of the mint’s annual output. All told, the coining facility struck 973.3 million coins in the first three months of 2026, significantly lower than the nearly 1.89 billion that rolled off presses during the same period in 2025. Broken down, the cumulative circulation production figures from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints in the first quarter of 2026 show a combined 315.84 million nickels, 260 million dimes, 366.6 million quarters, 29.4 million half dollars, and 1.82 million dollar coins.

All denominations but the quarter carry a single special design and/or date configuration for the nation’s semiquincentennial. The quarter, meanwhile, will showcase five motifs, including three designs already in production: the Mayflower Compact quarter, Revolutionary War quarter, and Declaration of Independence quarter; the latter will be released in June, while the U.S. Constitution quarter and Gettysburg Address quarter will hit the scene later this year.
