Cancan Commemorative

The Monnaie de Paris has released a collection that celebrates the iconic Moulin Rouge, the birthplace of the modern cancan dance. The five coins in the collection—a colorized, circulation-quality silver €10; a colorized silver €10; a silver €20; a gold €20; and a gold €200—highlight different aspects of the famous cabaret.

The obverse features a dynamic depiction of two French cancan dancers. The Moulin Rouge appears in the background, along with a design inspired by a French cancan painting featuring a portion of the Eiffel Tower. The common reverse is based on the iconic wings of the Moulin Rouge, with each part of the design referring to a different aspect of the performance: costume design, featherwork, embroidery, bootmaking, and ballet. OH LA LA appears at the top of the coin, with MOULIN ROUGE and PARIS below. On the €10 pieces, the reverse is blue, white, and red to reflect the colors of the French flag and the French cancan skirt. The colorized silver €10 and gold €20 coins are in the shape of the Moulin Rouge dancers’ skirts. 

Mintages are limited to 25,000 (circulation €10), 5,000 (colorized silver €10 and silver €20), 1,000 (gold €20), and 250 (gold €200). To purchase, visit the Monnaie de Paris website.
