For 250 years, the story of the United States has been told not only through its founding documents, monuments, and historic landmarks, but also through its coinage. Few objects have accompanied the nation’s history as closely as its coins. They have witnessed the birth of a republic, the expansion of a continent, periods of prosperity and hardship, artistic revolutions, technological progress, and the lives of generations of Americans.

More than instruments of commerce, coins are miniature works of art and enduring historical documents. Their portraits, symbols, inscriptions, and metals preserve the identity of the eras in which they were created. Some have become so iconic that they transcend numismatics itself, standing today as universal symbols of American history and culture.

Preserving America’s Numismatic Masterpieces

From the very beginning, one principle guided every decision behind this collection: respect.

Our intention was never to redesign, modernize, or reinterpret these legendary coins. Instead, our objective was to reproduce them with the greatest historical accuracy modern minting technology can offer, honoring the vision of the original engravers while allowing collectors to appreciate these masterpieces in a completely new way.

Every design was carefully studied to preserve its original proportions, artistic character, and historical identity. Rather than creating a contemporary version of these coins, we sought to recreate their appearance as faithfully as possible to how they would have looked when they first left the presses of the United States Mint.

This commitment required far more than simply enlarging existing designs.

Many of the coins selected for the Greatest United States Coins series rank among the rarest in American numismatics. Some survive in only a handful of examples, and even those often display different degrees of wear, striking weakness, adjustment marks, or surface imperfections accumulated over centuries.

In several cases, no single surviving specimen preserved every detail of the original design.

Our artists therefore conducted extensive historical and visual research, consulting auction archives, museum photography, specialized numismatic references, and multiple surviving specimens. Frequently, details that had disappeared on one coin remained visible on another. In some instances, information from two or even three different examples had to be carefully combined to reconstruct the most complete and historically faithful representation possible.

This process was not one of artistic reinvention, but of historical restoration. Every portrait, letter, denticle, ornament, relief, and field was individually analyzed before being recreated. The objective was always to preserve the integrity of the original design while allowing collectors to experience these masterpieces at an enlarged 50-millimeter format, where every detail can be appreciated with exceptional clarity.

Authenticity Beyond the Design

The same philosophy guided every finishing decision.

Each release is struck as a legal-tender 2-ounce coin in .999-fine silver with a generous 50-millimeter diameter. The different finishes were carefully selected to recreate the visual identity of the original historic coin.

Coins originally struck in gold feature genuine selective gold plating, preserving the warmth and brilliance of America’s legendary gold issues. Historic copper coins receive authentic copper plating to reproduce their original color and character. Silver designs are enhanced with carefully developed antique finishes that evoke the beautiful natural patina acquired by silver through decades—or even centuries—of gentle oxidation.

These finishes are not decorative effects. They are an essential part of faithfully recreating the appearance and personality of each historic coin.

Experiencing History in Your Hands

Beyond historical accuracy, another idea inspired the entire project: to give collectors the opportunity to experience these legendary coins in a direct, tangible, and deeply personal way.

Many of the masterpieces celebrated in this series can today be seen only in museums or a small number of prestigious private collections. Some are displayed only on exceptional occasions, while others are so rare that even experienced collectors may never have the chance to examine them in person.

Our ambition was never to replace these priceless originals. Rather, it was to allow collectors to experience something that photographs and books cannot fully convey: the pleasure of holding these historic designs in their hands, studying every detail under changing light, appreciating the sculpted relief with their fingertips, and discovering the remarkable artistry of America’s greatest engravers from an entirely new perspective.

For many enthusiasts, this collection offers the closest possible experience to appreciating some of America’s greatest numismatic treasures outside a museum or an extraordinary private collection.

Greatest United States Coins Series

The series began with the legendary 1933 double eagle (gold $20), widely considered one of the most beautiful coins ever produced by the United States Mint. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, its extraordinary artistry, dramatic history, and legendary rarity made it the natural starting point for the collection.

It was followed by the celebrated 1804 Draped Bust dollar, often known as the “King of American Coins.” Although dated 1804, its fascinating diplomatic history and extreme rarity have secured its place among the most famous coins ever struck.

The third release honors the mysterious 1913 Liberty Head nickel, one of American numismatics’ greatest enigmas. With only five known examples, it continues to fascinate collectors more than a century after its creation.

The 1787 Fugio cent, commonly regarded as America’s first official coin and closely associated with Benjamin Franklin, became the fourth release. Its famous “Mind Your Business” motto and symbolic design capture the ideals of the young republic and remain as relevant today as they were at the nation’s founding.

The collection then celebrates the 1849 Liberty Head double eagle, created at the dawn of the California Gold Rush and representing one of the most important milestones in American monetary history. With only a single original example known, it stands among the greatest treasures of American numismatics.

The sixth issue features the 1794 Flowing Hair dollar, widely recognized as the first silver dollar struck by the United States Mint. More than any other coin, it symbolizes the birth of an independent American monetary system and the aspirations of a young nation.

Most recently, the series welcomed the legendary 1894-S Barber dime. With only 24 pieces reportedly struck and very few surviving today, it remains one of the greatest rarities in American coinage. Its uncertain origins and extraordinary scarcity have transformed it into one of the most desired coins in the world.

Together, these seven releases tell the story of America through its coinage—from the nation’s earliest years to some of its greatest artistic and numismatic achievements.

Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary

The semiquincentennial is more than a historic milestone. It is an opportunity to celebrate the ideas, achievements, and artistic heritage that have shaped the United States for two and a half centuries.

Coins occupy a unique place within that legacy. They circulated through countless hands, witnessed defining moments in American history, and carried the nation’s symbols across generations. Few historical objects possess such a direct connection to everyday life.

By bringing these iconic designs together into one evolving collection, Art Mint hopes to honor not only the coins themselves, but also the artists, engravers, mint workers, historians, collectors, museums, auction houses, and researchers who have helped preserve this extraordinary heritage.

Although Art Mint is based in Europe, admiration for American numismatics knows no borders. The greatest United States coins have inspired collectors around the world and continue to represent the highest standards of artistry, craftsmanship, rarity, and historical significance.

Writing the Next Chapter Together

History is never complete.

One of the most exciting aspects of this project is inviting collectors themselves to participate in its future. In partnership with the American Numismatic Association, the public will have the opportunity to vote on one of the next legendary American coins to join the series. This initiative reflects the very spirit of numismatics: preserving the past while inspiring future generations of collectors.

Vote here or click at the link below for the next release in the series. Participants will be entered for a chance to win an example of Art Mint’s 1933 double eagle. Voting closes August 15, and the winner will be announced at the ANA’s 2026 World’s Fair of Money® in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, Art Mint is proud to pay tribute to one of the world’s greatest numismatic traditions and invites collectors everywhere to rediscover these masterpieces, explore the remarkable stories behind them, and help shape the next chapter of the Greatest United States Coins collection.
