The Free Library of Philadelphia will host a virtual program on April 24 at 11 a.m. (ET) exploring how coins reveal the politics and propaganda of the ancient Roman world. The presentation “What Do Coins Tell Us about the Politics & Propaganda of the Roman World?” will be led by librarian Dick Levinson, who also produces and hosts the Explore podcast for older adults. Levinson’s guest expert will be Dr. Jane DeRose Evans, chair and professor of art history at Temple University Tyler School of Art and Architecture.

A specialist in Roman history, Evans has conducted fieldwork across the Mediterranean, from southern France to Israel, studying ancient coinage. She also serves as a coin expert for the Harvard-Cornell Expeditions to Sardis, contributing to ongoing archaeological research.

The program will examine how imagery and inscriptions on Roman coins were used as political messages and imperial influence, offering insights into daily life and governance in antiquity. The event is free and open to the public, though advance registration is required.
