An Orwellian Commemorative
The Royal Mint is commemorating George Orwell, renowned author of Nineteen Eighty-Four, Animal Farm, and Coming Up for Air, with a £2 coin. The release marks the 75th anniversary of Orwell’s death and pays tribute to his legacy as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. The commemorative, which went on sale January 15, comes in brilliant uncirculated, gold proof, and silver proof versions.
The reverse features an evocative design inspired by Orwell’s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. At its center is a camera lens resembling an eye. Encircling the lens is the chilling phrase, “Big Brother is watching you,” a direct reference to his seminal work. Another thought-provoking quote from the novel appears on the coin’s edge: “There was truth and there was untruth.”
Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coins at The Royal Mint, expressed her excitement about the release: “The works of George Orwell have influenced generations, and his most famous works are still being studied today—decades from their first publication. I am delighted to share this unique design with collectors and fans of Orwell’s work, paying tribute to one of the most world-renowned authors of the 20th century.”
Orwell’s body of work, both fiction and nonfiction, often drew from his real-life experiences, including living in poverty and volunteering to fight against Francisco Franco’s Nationalist forces during the Spanish Civil War. His writings remain a powerful commentary on poverty, class, and power.
Starting January 20, visitors to The Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant, South Wales, can strike their own George Orwell £2 coin as a collectible. Tickets to strike an Orwell coin are available for an additional £7.50.
